Monday marked the first day of the last week of the summer in the Denver area and we are happy to be back. After picking up all of the campers we headed out for Cherry Creek State Park. New campers were oriented with where we set up our gear for the day and all the campers did a great job helping the staff. We applied plenty of sunscreen and moved to a shady spot for our morning activities. Our first songs of the session were “Little Red Wagon” and “3 Short-Necked Buzzards.” Campers received a small snack while staff Kaela and Tim reviewed rules that enable the group to stay safe and have fun at camp. The group played a name where everyone introduced themselves and mentioned their favorite color and/or animal. Our game of the morning was Evilution and campers had fun interacting with those they had never met. After our high energy activities the group decorated water bottles and discussed the importance of staying hydrated in such hot weather. Just before lunch the group collaborated to choose a name, and you may now call us the Jellyfish Bears Climbing Mount Hot Sauce!

During lunch the members of JBCMH got to know one another better. After lunch we filled our water bottles and set out to explore the West beaches of Cherry Creek Lake. We came across so many Crawfish claws that we couldn’t keep of track of them all. Each camper practiced (or learned) skipping rocks. We enjoyed watching the passing boats and other people enjoying the park. To finish the afternoon the group had free play, snack, and created the group code. The group also opened a Time Capsule from last summer’s campers and explored some of its contents. We will be making our own Capsule by the end of the week. We had a great first day and are looking forward to what the rest of the week has in store for us.
