Tommy knew from an early age that camp was his life’s work! After many summers attending and then directing camps in Ohio, Wisconsin and Colorado, Tommy started Mountain Day Camp in 2005, which evolved into AO Camps, and is now Camp Granite Lake.
“The growth I experienced at camp influences everything I do in work and play. I wouldn’t be who I am, and I wouldn’t have my energetic and independent approach to life without it. Little did I know the influence camp was having on my life – I was just having fun!”
Tommy’s family is actively involved in life at camp. His wife, Ali, is a pediatrician. Their kids are: Joey, age 3, and Mara, age 1. They live up at camp all summer, too.
11 Years at Camp Granite Lake
Tom has been working summers at Camp Granite Lake since 2011, and has been a part of the year-round team, first as Program Director, and now as Assistant Director since 2013. During the summer, you’ll frequently see Tom with a guitar in his hand leading one of his favorite camp songs, like ‘Sloopy’ or ‘Heart of Gold’. During the off season, Tom works with prospective and enrolled families, giving them tours of camp and visiting them for slideshows, as well as interviewing and hiring staff.
Tom and his wife, Jordan live in Boulder during the winter, and he enjoys playing guitar, digging through record shops, rooting for the Broncos, and running in his free time.
This is Olivia’s second year at Camp Granite Lake, and she is SO excited to be back! Since last summer she has been traveling here, there and everywhere! She spent a few months working as a substitute teacher in Michigan, and spent her spring in Texas, where she worked as an Environmental Education Instructor at the Outdoor School! Olivia loves anything that gets her outside and moving, but in particular she loves running, hiking, and kayaking in her free time! She is really looking forward to being back in the beautiful mountains of Colorado.
Jake is ecstatic to become a part of the CGL team this summer! Jake received his. B.S. in Human Biology from SUNY Oneonta last year, and now lives and works in Colorado. College is where he played club soccer and really found his love for winter backpacking trips in the Adirondacks and canoe camping in the Everglades! When he isn’t working in Estes Park, he is playing sports with friends, traveling the East Coast, and pursuing his life-long dream of becoming a connoisseur of ice cream.
Zach can’t wait for his second summer with CGL. He is from California and recently graduated from Tulane University where he studied Marketing and Public Relations. He has worked at other camps as a counselor and as a photographer in the past and thinks nothing is more fun than going on outdoor adventures with campers! This summer, he returns as a Village Director.
Greetings from the land of 10,000 lakes plus! Susie is currently a student at Whitman College out in Walla Walla, Washington studying Film & Media. Although she calls Minnesota her home, Susie loves to travel around the globe and has a passion to explore the great outdoors. Some of her trips include backpacking in Yellowstone for three weeks to canoeing near the Arctic Circle for a summer. As for pastimes, Susie loves to run, read books, and hike/go on walks. This will be Susie’s second year with CGL and she is thrilled to be leading backpacking trips again this summer!
Josh Grant is a crazy, caring, adventurous sort of chap. Growing up in Colorado, he has attended summer camp or worked with summer camps almost his entire life. Originally an actor, he quit the stage in 2006 and has been teaching elementary and middle school, and working with church youth groups ever since. Josh has survived a flash flood, faced down several bears, and has sailed the ocean blue, but for him truly nothing quite compares to getting a group of kids together and helping them learn and laugh and just have fun growing together. 2016 is going to be an amazing summer and Josh truly can’t wait to come back to Camp Granite Lake!
Mike attended camp as a young man in the Pacific Northwest where he was raised. He has been involved in maintenance and repair of a variety of things for all of his adult life. From 8 years in the military as a mechanic to taking care of things around the house!
He has been the primary facility and equipment caretaker at the Camp Granite Lake property for 8 years. His favorite thing about camp is seeing the kids have a great time. He takes great satisfaction in knowing that the things he has built or repaired are being used and enjoyed by campers and staff as they go about their day.
Mike and his wife Angie have been married 27 years, have raised three children and have 7 grandchildren.
Angie’s love of the outdoors and the impact camp has on people both young and old makes her life at camp a dream come true! Raised on a farm in the Northwest and attending camp at a young age influenced her love for the outdoors and people. As hospitality director of Camp Granite Lake, her days are filled with a variety of activities; whether you find her in the kitchen overseeing today’s meals, in the parking lot directing traffic on check in day, or welcoming you to your first visit on the property, you will find her with a smile on her face and a warm hello and handshake.
“ I love seeing the smiles on campers’ faces as they encounter the new experiences that camp has to offer them; whether it’s a hike around the lake, songs being sung around an evening campfire or a plate stacked high with pancakes and bacon, there is no place as wonderful as camp!”
Angie, and her husband, Mike, moved to Colorado in 1998, they have been married for 27 years, raised 3 children and have 7 grandchildren.
My name is Baleigh Whitman and I go to school at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas! I am currently studying elementary education and work with early childhood and ESL students. Samantha can’t wait to be back at Camp Granite Lake for her third year in a row! She’s looking forward to another summer of Nature & Ecology, fishing, and adventures. During the rest of the year, Samantha teaches in a first and second grade classroom in Vermont where she is also an interior firefighter, as well as a backcountry ski coach at Sugarbush Resort. Hammocks, good books, painting and exploring Vermont are her go-to hobbies!
Jen Kling: by winter, a philosophy professor at Siena Heights University in Michigan, by summer, a Village Director at Camp Granite Lake! When not under cover of her philosophical alter-ego, Jen loves introducing campers to different camp activities, running awesome all-camp games, and listening to the great things that campers have to say. She is the Village Director for the Intermediate campers, and also manages the lakefront, due to a short stint as Aquaman’s understudy in her youth (Jen worked for a sailing camp in Indiana for several summers in high school and college). When not creating cool camp teambuilding challenges with the greatest of ease, Jen enjoys hanging out with her daughter Kaylee, age 2, her husband Patrick, and her dog Cambridge (all of whom are likely superheros, but some of whom are not so disguised). She can’t wait to get back to camp this summer!
Erin is a Colorado native and is currently studying biology at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. She loves the outdoors and is super duper excited to spend her first summer at Camp Granite Lake. In her free time, Erin loves to ski, water ski, hike, paint, and hammock.
