Camp Safety and Communication: Our Commitment to Your Child’s Well-Being

At Camp Granite Lake, we are deeply committed to the safety and well-being of your camper throughout their session with us. It is also important to us to provide a high level of parent communication, to allow our families to feel confident that we are focused on working to keep your child happy, and well-cared for while at camp.

Emergency/Fire Safety

  • Welcome Speech & Fire Drill: Upon arrival, campers participate in a welcome speech where we introduce them to our fire drill protocol. They are instructed and prepared on what to do when they hear the camp alarm.
  • Local Emergency Support: We maintain a strong relationship with local emergency services and Jefferson/Boulder County Emergency Services Departments.
  • Evacuation Plan: In the event of a nearby fire or any emergency requiring evacuation, we have arrangements in place to evacuate everyone safely. We have enough vehicles to transport campers off-site, and each camper is assigned a seat in a specific vehicle by cabin, to help with a quick and organized evacuation.

Water Safety

Our commitment to safety extends to our water activities, including swimming and boating.

  • Lifeguards & Certifications: Lifeguards on the lake are trained and certified to be lifeguards through American Red Cross or similar courses. Lifeguards may also take part in in-service training throughout the summer.
  • PFDs: Campers are required to wear PFDs while boating (kayaking, canoeing, SUP, sailing). Lifeguards check PFDs before campers get on the water.
  • Swim Test: Upon arrival, campers who wish to swim are required to complete a swim test to assess their swimming level. Based on the results, campers are classified as either red (requires a PFD) or green (safe to swim without a PFD).
  • Sign-In/Sign-Out System: We maintain a sign-in and sign-out system for campers in the swim area, and lifeguards perform regular counts to ensure all campers are accounted for at all times.

Sun Safety

Protecting your child from the sun is an essential part of our health & safety routine.

  • We provide sunscreen with SPF 50, and each camper receives a Nalgene water bottle when they first arrive at camp.
  • There are times throughout that day that campers within their cabin or activity groups are reminded to drink water and apply sunscreen. We take water breaks during activities and when moving between activities, and sunscreen is applied throughout the day, particularly before and after being on the lake.

Animal Safety

  • Animal Awareness: We maintain awareness of any wildlife in the area and ensure that campers are educated on safety when interacting with animals.

Staff Safety & Training

Our staff undergo rigorous training to help ensure they are focused on creating a safe and nurturing environment for our campers.

  • Background Checks & Fingerprinting: All staff members undergo comprehensive background checks and fingerprinting.
  • References: Staff provide 3 references (2 professional, 1 personal) for verification prior to being hired.
  • Training: We conduct an 8-day staff training program before campers arrive. Topics include appropriate conduct with children, managing homesickness, running a cabin, body safety and abuse prevention, and much more.

Healthcare & First Aid

We take healthcare seriously so campers can receive proper attention in case of any medical emergencies.

  • Healthcare Center: Our healthcare center is locked and secure, and staffed by an RN. Medications are administered and logged by a staff member with a Medication Administration certification.
  • Forms: Parents are required to submit medical forms prior to camp to ensure we have all the necessary health information for each camper.
  • Response Time: In case of an emergency, the closest emergency services are 3 miles away from camp, and typically respond within minutes. The nearest urgent care facility is 25 minutes away.
  • Training: All Counselors are trained in First Aid, CPR, and Epipen administration.
  • Medical Kits – Each cabin and activity box contains a small first aid kit with essentials such as band aids/antiseptic wipes and sick bags.
  • Emergency Medications – For campers who have emergency medications (e.g. epipen/inhaler), these are kept in a central location and transported by their Counselor to each activity.

Communication with Parents

Keeping you informed is key to providing peace of mind.

  • Regular Updates: We stay in touch with you throughout the camp session, sending regular email updates and daily photo uploads.
  • Direct Communication: If we have any concerns regarding your child – whether illness, injury, homesickness, or any other issue – we strive to contact you directly. We always welcome parents calling or emailing us to check in on their camper, particularly if they have received a worrying piece of mail, so that we can address any situation.
  • Examples of Parent Feedback During 2024 Sessions:
    • “We can’t thank you enough for the updates! Knowing my children are safe means the world to me and I’m sure you know. Thank you so much for all that you are doing!”
      — Chase

    • “Thank you for sending these updates proactively and clearly, it means so much to all of us parents. We so appreciate how you’re handling this!”
      — Rachel

    • “Thank you for the continued updates! We appreciate everything you are doing to keep us informed. Sam may mention that his dad helps with wildfires … He does! He is in the National Guard and flies helicopters that are used to carry water buckets! We have been keeping an eye on the fire and are glad you are in the clear!”
      — Beth
